The word, Atman (pronounced AHT MAHN), translates to "spirit of man" in Sanskrit. Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records and the Phat Fashions clothing empire, created the brand as a physical expression of his spiritual perspectives and ideals.
"I was reading scriptures in a unique version of the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu book of worship. This version was adorned with beautiful illustrations depicting the deities of Hinduism. When I looked at the vibrancy of the paintings, the colors, the beauty in the costumes they wore, I was inspired to create a jean collection," said Simmons.
Atman is a contemporary clothing line with inspiration from global spiritual sources such as the Hindu seven chakras. Images of the Hindu deities Lakshmi and Ganesha appear on the backs of zip-up hoodys made of organic cotton and cashmere. Organic cotton T-shirts and denim represent the different colors and quotations of the seven chakras and feature the Om symbol across the chest and on back pockets.
"The designs can stand on their own. The hip-hop community and all communities will see fun in the colors and in the art. It is true that the brand aligns itself with my pursuit of yoga, but the colors and designs make it hot and exciting. "
